Jasprit Bumrah Set To Replace Gill As Vice-Captain Of India

Jasprit Bumrah was set to replace Shubman Gill as vice-captain of India for the Champions Trophy 2025.
India’s focus has shifted towards the 50-over format with the Champions Trophy 2025 approaching. The upcoming ODI series against England is seen as a crucial preparation platform for the event. While Bumrah could be rested for this series, he is expected to take on the role of India’s vice-captain for the Champions Trophy, pending full fitness.
According to a report by the Times of India, Bumrah will serve as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the tournament, which means Shubman Gill will be demoted from the position he held during the Sri Lanka series. Bumrah’s rise in the pecking order follows his consistent performances and leadership during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he captained India in their sole victory.
Speculation is growing that Bumrah could soon take over as India’s Test captain. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya, previously tipped as Rohit’s successor in white-ball formats, has seen his leadership prospects decline due to fitness issues.
Jasprit Bumrah has been an integral part of the Indian leadership group for some time. He served as vice-captain during India’s ODI series against South Africa in early 2022 and made his captaincy debut against Ireland in 2023, marking his return to international cricket after a break.

In the Test format, Bumrah has also taken charge, leading India in two matches during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia, where he captained in Perth and Sydney, showcasing his leadership abilities and impressing selectors.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squad for the upcoming England series and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 later this week. Though Bumrah may be rested for the three ODIs, he is expected to be part of India’s squad for the Champions Trophy in February-March.
