Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, known for his consistency across formats and especially his ability to bowl yorkers, has revealed the secret behind his lethal yorkers.
Bumrah, who is currently part of India’s T20 World Cup squad in the USA, spoke to the ICC about his childhood love for fast bowling and how he honed his yorker skills.
“I played a lot of tennis-ball cricket and rubber-ball cricket when I was growing up. I used to play a lot with my friends in summer camps, on summer vacations, whenever we had free time,” Bumrah told the ICC.
Fueled by his fascination with fast bowling greats he saw on television, Bumrah practiced relentlessly, believing the yorker to be the key to taking wickets. “So I tried to replicate that,” he said.
Even today, repetition remains the core of Bumrah’s yorker mastery. “Is it [tennis-ball cricket] the secret? I don’t know. But repetition surely is. Because I’ve kept this delivery, I still practice it. I keep on practicing it. Every skill needs practice to get stronger. So I think it’s a combination of both,” explained the 30-year-old pacer.

Bumrah missed the 2022 T20 World Cup due to a back injury that also sidelined him for the IPL 2023 and the World Test Championship final. Since his return, Bumrah says his focus has shifted to enjoying the game rather than dwelling on uncertainties.
“Since I came back from my injury, I’ve only focused on enjoying the game as much as I can. There will be good days and bad days; that’s part of the process. I started playing because I love this sport, and that’s what I’ll focus on, not the outcome. That way, you reduce pressure and enjoy the game more,” Bumrah concluded.
