Jay Shah was reported to succeed Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the ICC, becoming the youngest in history at 35.
Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to become the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding the current chairman, Greg Barclay. According to sources, Barclay, who has served two terms, has informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s chair Mike Baird, that he does not intend to seek a third term. His decision came after learning of Shah’s plans to replace him in November.
Shah, who is supported by the cricket boards of England and Australia, has secured the necessary backing to be elected as the ICC chairman. If confirmed, Shah will become the fifth Indian to hold the prestigious position, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
An ICC spokesperson told The Age, “ICC chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022.”

The election process for the new chairman will begin with nominations required by August 27, 2024. If more than one candidate is nominated, an election will be held, with the new chair’s term commencing on December 1, 2024. Under ICC rules, the chairman’s election requires a simple majority of nine votes out of 16, a change from the previous requirement of a two-thirds majority.
Shah, who has one year remaining as BCCI secretary before entering a mandatory three-year cooling-off period starting in October 2025, is expected to assume the ICC chairmanship while still holding his position in the BCCI.
