RP Singh criticized Joe Root’s unconventional dismissal in the third Test against India, suggesting that such a shot could have jeopardized a lesser-known player’s career if attempted.

RP Singh criticized Joe Root’s unorthodox dismissal during England’s innings in the third Test against India, highlighting that attempting such a risky shot could have dire consequences for a player in lower levels of cricket. Root’s attempt at a reverse scoop off Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery led to his dismissal, a move Singh deemed unfit for the international stage.

Singh’s remarks, made during a discussion on Colors Cineplex, underscored the importance of technique and discipline in cricket, suggesting that such shots are unacceptable.

“The shot Joe Root played, if someone had played such a shot at domestic or club level, his career might have gotten over. He would have been asked to first correct things and come as you can’t play like that,” he said.

“I am not able to think how the support staff would see that shot. I never thought such a compact player would play this shot and that too against Jasprit Bumrah. He might have thought two days ago that he would try something unique as Bumrah was anyway dismissing him,” Singh added.

Root’s dismissal initiated a collapse in the England batting lineup, resulting in the loss of their last eight wickets for just 95 runs and conceding a substantial 126-run first-innings lead to India.

Singh emphasized that Bumrah’s success against Root might have influenced the latter’s mindset during the match, leading to an error in judgment. Root’s struggle against Bumrah continued, marking the ninth time he fell to the Indian paceman in Test cricket.

“There was a match being played in between this match. Jasprit Bumrah has been on top of him (Root) in this series and he has been dismissed in different fashions. It’s not that he has been dismissed similarly. I would say it’s more in Joe Root’s mind that he needs to be careful against Jasprit Bumrah,” Singh said.

With Root’s disappointing performance in the ongoing series, managing only 70 runs at an average of 14.00 across five innings, concerns arise regarding his ability to counter Bumrah effectively.
