England’s head coach Matthew Mott might be dismissed soon, but Jos Buttler will retain the white-ball captaincy as England is set to revamp its team and management.
England’s white-ball cricket team is on the brink of a major overhaul following a series of disappointing performances. According to a report from The Telegraph, while captain Jos Buttler is expected to retain his role, head coach Matthew Mott is likely to be sacked after just two years in the job.
Notably, this marks the second consecutive year England has failed to defend an ICC title, coupled with a poor tournament performance. In 2023, the team endured a disappointing ODI World Cup campaign as defending champions, finishing in 7th place in the 10-team competition with only three wins from nine games.
Their performance in the recent T20 World Cup was also underwhelming. Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, England failed to find their winning corner and could not defend their T20 World Cup title. They suffered defeats against Australia, South Africa, and eventual champions India, exiting at the semifinal stage.
The decision to remove Mott comes after a review conducted by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key following the team’s exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-finals.
Mott’s tenure, which began with a T20 World Cup triumph in 2022, has taken a sharp downturn since then. The team’s failure to reach the knockout stages of the 2023 ODI World Cup and their recent World Cup semi-final defeat to India have put immense pressure on the coaching staff.
Buttler is reportedly keen on a head coach with extensive international playing experience and a deep understanding of modern cricket. This has led to speculation about potential replacements, with several high-profile names linked to the role.
Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who has worked closely with Buttler at the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, is an early favorite. Other contenders include Michael Hussey, a former consultant with the England team, and ex-England players Andrew Flintoff and Jonathan Trott.
The ECB is expected to announce Mott’s successor before England’s upcoming white-ball series against Australia in September.
