LSG coach Justin Langer downplayed interest in the Indian head coach job, acknowledging its prestige while hinting at hesitation.
The prestigious position of head coach for the Indian cricket team will be up for grabs after Rahul Dravid’s tenure concludes following the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid assumed the role in 2021 after India’s disappointing early exit from the tournament, with the aim of improving the team’s performance. The BCCI has begun accepting applications for the head coach position as Dravid’s term wraps up in June.
Justin Langer, head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), recently downplayed reports suggesting his interest in the role. While acknowledging the immense pressure and workload associated with coaching the Indian team, Langer also expressed the appeal of the challenge and the opportunity to win ICC trophies.
“It would almost be the biggest job in cricket—being the head coach of the Indian cricket team. One is because of the huge volume of cricket and the huge expectation. It would be a great challenge. It would be great fun, and it would be a wonderful opportunity to win ICC titles,” remarked Langer after LSG’s final game of the season against MI.

Despite his enthusiasm for the potential opportunity, Langer’s comments hinted at some hesitation. He refrained from explicitly expressing his desire for the position; instead, he was suggesting, “I’m sure the next person who gets the job will be really looking forward to the project.”
However, the former Australian coach also expressed his concerns regarding the winning pressure on India’s side. “But with all these things, the timing has got to be right. I spent four or so years with the Australian cricket team. It is all-encompassing. It is exhausting. Rahul Dravid will probably tell you the same thing, and Ravi Shastri will probably tell you the same thing. The pressure on winning for the Indian team is massive,” concluded Langer.
