Kane Williamson expressed his willingness to support Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill, describing him as a “great thinker,” and vowed to assist him in his newfound captaincy role.
With the sudden departure of former skipper Hardik Pandya, Gill shoulders the responsibility of leading Gujarat Titans to success in the IPL 2024. Offering his support, teammate and NZ skipper Kane Williamson expressed his readiness to assist Gill, praising his cricketing tactics.
“He (Gill) is a great player and like I said a great cricketing brain, and I would certainly encourage him to walk that path and take his decisions. No doubt that he will look to do the same. I will be more than happy to help Shubman in any way I can and Shubman knows that,” Williamson told PTI.
Despite expectations of a decline after his remarkable 890-run season, Shubman Gill has only improved. His performances for India, particularly in ODIs and recently in Tests against England, highlighted his remarkable form.
Gujarat Titans continued their strong run in the previous season, securing 10 wins out of 14 matches to claim the top spot in the table. However, their lack of experience became evident in the playoffs, where they fell short against the seasoned champions, Chennai Super Kings.
Williamson also expressed confidence in Gill’s ability to steer through tough times. Reflecting on the upcoming journey, he emphasized the learning curve ahead for the team. With key player Mohammad Shami sidelined for the entire IPL season, the pressure is on Gill. However, Williamson highlighted that facing challenges is part and parcel of captaincy. Despite changes in the team, he sees this as an exciting opportunity for Gill.

“As for the team and myself, I would generally like to share some ideas. It is a long season ahead. It will be quite a journey and we will all be learning through it. Obviously, there has been a few changes in the camp, that’s a challenge for every team as every year you have some adjustments to make, really exciting opportunity for Shubman and we need to focus what’s there in front of us,” Williamson concluded.
