Cricket legend Kapil Dev called Jasprit Bumrah “1000 times better” and also praised the fitness and work ethic of modern players.
Legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev surprised fans with his showers of praise for current pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. In a refreshing departure from the recent series of controversial statements surrounding the T20 World Cup, Dev heaped immense praise on Bumrah.
“Bumrah is 1000 times better than me. These young boys are far better than us. We had more experience. They are better,” Dev was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
Speaking of Jasprit Bumrah, the speedster has secured two scalps in the semi-final versus England, giving away only 12 runs in his 2.4 overs. His best figures so far have been 3 wickets for 7 runs, making him one of the best economical bowlers, along with a commendable number of wickets.
Dev, known for his fiery fast bowling during his playing days, went on to acknowledge the overall improvement in cricketers. “These young boys are far better than us. We had more experience. They are better,” he said, recognising the advancements in training and fitness that modern players benefit from.
While acknowledging his generation’s experience, Dev conceded that the emphasis on physical fitness during his era was far less than what it is today. Modern cricketers, like Bumrah, dedicate significant time to their physical conditioning, allowing them to perform at a higher level.
This shift in focus impressed Dev, who further commended the work ethic of the current Indian team. “They are very good. Outstanding. They are fitter. They are much more hardworking. They are fantastic,” he added.
Nevertheless, India will be facing the unbeatable South Africa in the finals. The final showdown will be played at the Kensington Oval Barbados Stadium at 8 p.m. IST.
