The KKR vs. RR match on April 17th might be rescheduled due to security concerns from coinciding with Rama Navami festivities and general elections.
As per reports, the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), scheduled for April 17th at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, might be rescheduled or relocated due to security concerns. It has been hinted to all the involved parties, including broadcasters, state associations, and franchises.
The probable rescheduling occurs due to the concurrence of the annual Rama Navami festival with the ongoing general elections in India. Authorities have expressed concerns about their ability to provide adequate security for both the IPL match and election-related activities happening on the same day.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently exploring options to address these concerns. This includes discussions with the Kolkata Police, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), and representatives from both franchises and broadcasters.
“The discussions are on with the police authorities, and we will take a decision soon,” said a top IPL official, as quoted by Cricbuzz, highlighting the urgency of finding a solution.
While the BCCI planned the IPL schedule in two phases to avoid conflicts with the general elections, the Rama Navami festival presents an unforeseen challenge. The initial schedule covered the first 21 matches, followed by a second announcement outlining the remaining 53 games after the election dates were confirmed.
Notably, the BCCI prioritised maintaining the home-and-away format for teams, opting against relocating matches to a neutral venue like the UAE. However, the current situation might necessitate a slight adjustment to the schedule.
