KL Rahul confirmed that Rinku Singh is set to debut in the ODI series against South Africa, while also praising his exceptional temperament, game awareness, and successful track record in various formats.
During the pre-series press conference, KL Rahul, leading Team India, announced the promising inclusion of Rinku Singh, a dynamic left-handed batsman, in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. Commending Rinku’s remarkable performances in the IPL and T20Is, Rahul specifically highlighted his exceptional composure, game awareness, and steady temperament in high-pressure situations.
The left-hand batter’s exceptional performance in the recent three-match T20I series against South Africa earned him his debut call-up for the ODI series, amassing an impressive 82 runs across two innings, leading to his selection in the upcoming ODI series against the Proteas.
Impressed by Rinku’s versatility across formats, particularly in first-class cricket, Rahul further expressed confidence in Singh’s abilities and confirmed his opportunity to showcase his skills in the upcoming ODI series.
“He (Rinku) has shown what a really good player he is. Watching him in the IPL, we all knew that he’s very skilled. But what’s been really good is the temperament he has shown in the T20I series and the game awareness and calmness that he has shown under pressure. That has been very refreshing for me to see on television. I just spoke to him about that as well. He has performed really well across formats in first-class cricket. So, yes, he will get his opportunity even in the ODI series,” the stand-in skipper said.
Rahul further stated that Sanju Samson will assume a middle-order batting position, traditionally his role in ODIs, batting at five or six. Rahul will be the wicketkeeper for now, but he mentioned the possibility of Samson taking up the gloves if an opportunity arises.
The ODI series against South Africa commences at Johannesburg’s New Wanderers Stadium on Sunday, December 17.
