Rahul Placed in Tough Pit
KL Rahul struggled to pick a preferred IPL 2025 teammate among Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni, calling it a “real pickle” due to his strong ties with each player.
KL Rahul has been in the centre of almost all conversations in the past few days, mostly because of his slump in test career and overall batting averages. However, recently, he was placed in a tough spot when he was given a choice to pick his IPL 2025 teammate amongst a few big names.
In an interview segment on Star Sports titled “KL in a Pickle,” the 32-year-old was asked to choose a teammate for IPL 2025 among Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni. The question caught Rahul off guard. He responded, “I don’t know. It’s a tough one. This is a real pickle you have put me in. I have enjoyed playing with all of them. Very tough to answer.”
Rahul, who captained the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) from 2022 to 2024, was released by the franchise after a mixed record, including reaching the playoffs in 2022 and 2023 but ending seventh in 2024. He will enter the 2025 IPL mega auction at the highest base price of INR 2 crore.
Kohli, Rohit, and Dhoni continue as icons of the league, with Kohli as the all-time leading run scorer with 8,004 runs, followed by Rohit at third with 6,628 runs, and Dhoni at sixth with 5,243 runs. Rahul currently holds the 11th position on the list, amassing 4,683 runs.
Gambhir Backs Rahul
KL Rahul’s recent form slump has raised questions regarding his place in the squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. However, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir backed Rahul, highlighting his versatility. Gambhir commented, “…He can bat at the top of the order, he can bat at No. 3 and he can actually bat at No. 6 as well. You need quite a lot of talent to be doing these kinds of jobs as well. And he’s kept wickets in the one-day format as well. Imagine how many countries have players like KL who can open the batting and can bat at No. 6 as well?”

Despite Gambhir’s support, Rahul’s recent performances have raised concerns. In a recent unofficial Test for India A against Australia A in Melbourne, Rahul scored only 4 and 10 runs, as the team lost by six wickets.
