Kumar Sangakkara was rumoured to leave Rajasthan Royals for England’s white-ball coaching role, sparking speculation of Rahul Dravid’s return to the franchise.
Rajasthan Royals could be on the verge of a significant change, as a report by Cricbuzz suggested that Kumar Sangakkara may soon step down as the franchise’s Director of Cricket to potentially take on the role of England’s white-ball coach. This development could open the door for Rahul Dravid to return to the Royals, a team he has both played for and coached before taking up his current role with the Indian national team in 2022.
Cricbuzz’s report highlighted Sangakkara’s close relationship with England Cricket managing director Rob Key and England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, cultivated during his tenure with Rajasthan Royals. However, Sangakkara had recently downplayed the possibility of taking up the England coaching position, expressing contentment with his current role at the IPL franchise.
“I know my name has been mentioned, but there has not been any approach as such. The England white-ball job is an exciting prospect for anyone, but there are many good candidates out there. I am very happy at the moment. The Rajasthan Royals experience has been very fulfilling, and I have really enjoyed the job over the last four years,” Sangakkara was quoted by English media.

The search for a new England white-ball coach began after Matthew Mott resigned from the position. In the interim, former English batter Marcus Trescothick has taken up the role, but the ECB’s search for a permanent replacement is reportedly in full swing.
Should the reports prove accurate, this could mark Rahul Dravid’s return to a leadership role, offering him a chance to guide Rajasthan Royals once again, after having previously played a pivotal role in the team’s success and watching India clinch the T20 World Cup under his coaching.
