New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson faces a potential year-long absence from cricket due to a recurring stress fracture in his back, which saw him withdraw from the second Test against South Africa after feeling discomfort despite taking six wickets in the first Test.
Having previously undergone back surgery, the 29-year-old’s latest injury has dealt him another blow. However, surgery is not necessary this time, though he will be sidelined for an extended period.
Jamieson expressed gratitude for the support he’s received, acknowledging the challenges ahead but remaining hopeful for a return to action. He emphasized his determination to overcome this setback and continue his cricketing journey.
“The last few days have been some of my most challenging but I am hugely grateful for the support I’ve received from my partner, family, team-mates, support staff and medical professionals. I know injuries are part of life as a cricketer and at my age, I am hopeful I still have many more playing days ahead of me,” Jamieson said to ESPNCricinfo.
“I’ve got a bit of a roadmap as to how to manage it. I know some of the hurdles I’ll have to overcome, probably more mentally and emotionally, the physical side is the easy part. You just rest and build back up. It’s almost autopilot in a way,” he added.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed his support for Jamieson’s recovery from injury, acknowledging the setback as tough news. Despite the challenge, Stead emphasized Jamieson’s determination to continue playing for New Zealand and assured him of the team’s full support throughout his rehabilitation journey.
