West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard, presently serving as the Mumbai Indians’ batting coach in the IPL, has been appointed as a consultant for England in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
England has recruited West Indies’ Kieron Pollard as a consultant for the 2024 T20 World Cup following their underwhelming ODI World Cup display and a recent 3-2 loss to the West Indies in the T20I series. The move aims to improve England’s performance, leveraging Pollard’s Caribbean cricket expertise. According to The Telegraph, Pollard’s involvement will be temporary due to his commitments in various cricket leagues and his role as Mumbai Indians’ batting coach. Although he won’t join full-time, Pollard will contribute to England’s campaign in the tournament scheduled to start in early June.
Rob Key recently took responsibility for their lackluster performance in the ODI World Cup, attributing it to the absence of local expertise in their coaching team. Ahead of the T20 World Cup, the head coach aims to rectify this by considering the addition of Kieron Pollard.
“I hold myself accountable for a lot of it really. I’ve set up a coaching team that had no local experience, really. Actually, someone who knows these conditions really well says, By the way, it’s hotter than the sun out there; make sure you have a bat. We got so caught up in what was going to happen five or six hours down the line,” Key had said earlier.
The variability of the pitches, sometimes slow and low, poses challenges for visiting teams. Given that many English players lack experience in the West Indies, Pollard’s inclusion is viewed as vital to provide crucial insights and guidance for England during the T20 World Cup.
