Lockie Ferguson Out With Injury Ahead of Tournament

Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a foot injury, with Kyle Jamieson stepping in as his replacement.

New Zealand’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy have been dealt a significant blow as fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a foot injury. The 33-year-old was initially named in New Zealand’s 15-man squad for the competition in Pakistan, after taking part in the UAE-based International League T20. However, Ferguson did not feature in the Black Caps’ Tri-Nations series against South Africa and Pakistan.

After joining the squad, Ferguson complained of soreness in his right foot following New Zealand’s warm-up match against Afghanistan on Sunday. After a medical assessment, it was confirmed that Ferguson would be unable to participate in the Champions Trophy.

New Zealand’s head coach, Gary Stead, expressed disappointment at Ferguson’s injury. “We’re really disappointed for Lockie. Lockie is a key part of the bowling group and brings a lot of major tournament experience, and we know how much he was looking forward to representing New Zealand at another major event. We wish him well for his recovery and hope he is back firing soon,” said Stead as quoted by NZ Herald.

Ferguson’s injury opens the door for Kyle Jamieson to make his return to the Black Caps for the first time in over a year. The 30-year-old has not played for New Zealand since February 2024, following a back injury during the team’s Test series victory over South Africa.

Since recovering, Jamieson has made an impressive return with Canterbury in the T20 Super Smash, where he took 14 wickets at an average of just over 18, maintaining an economy rate of 5.95 runs per over. He has also participated in two Ford Trophy 50-over matches, including recent performances against Central Districts and Northern Districts.

“Kyle brings plenty of pace and extra bounce, which will suit the conditions here in Pakistan. He’s shown since returning in the Super Smash how effective he can be in the shorter forms of the game, and he’s bowled with real pace and energy which is what you’re looking for from a pace bowler, especially at a pinnacle event,” Stead concluded.
