Australian cricketer Matthew Wade received a reprimand for arguing with umpires over a dead ball call during the T20 World Cup match against England.
Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade received an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their T20 World Cup group stage match against England on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the 18th over of Australia’s innings. Facing a delivery from Adil Rashid, Wade played the ball back expecting it to be a dead ball. However, the umpire did not signal a dead ball, prompting Wade to argue with the officials.
The ICC stated in a media release that Wade violated Article 2.8 of the Code of Conduct, which prohibits players from showing dissent towards umpires’ decisions during international matches. Consequently, he was handed a demerit point, his first offense in the past two years.
Notably, Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct typically result in a reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, or one to two demerit points.
Wade admitted to the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charges were filed by the on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Joel Wilson, along with the third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madangopal.
