Gujarat Titans’ wicket-keeper Matthew Wade will miss the initial matches of the IPL for the Sheffield Shield Final.
Gujarat Titans’ wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade will miss the team’s opening match in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) due to his commitment to playing in the Sheffield Shield final with Tasmania.
The Titans, finalists in the 2023 IPL season, are scheduled to begin their campaign against the Mumbai Indians on March 25th. However, Wade will be unavailable for both the opener and their second match against the Chennai Super Kings on March 27th, as the Tasmanian Shield final will run from March 21st to 25th.
“He’s spoken with his IPL franchise and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game,” Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan told reporters in Hobart. However, the Tasmania-born might be available for GT’s third match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 31st.
The left-handed batter had previously captained the Australian T20 team on occasion and has shown impressive batting performances in the lower order for the national side. Despite his previous struggles in the IPL, Wade’s experience remains a valuable asset for the Titans.
Wade has been a part of the Titans since their debut in the 2022 IPL season. However, his batting performance has not stoodout. In 2022, he played ten matches, scoring 157 runs at an average of 15.70 and a strike rate of 113.77. Even last year, he did not feature in any IPL matches for the Titans, which finished runners-up to the Chennai Super Kings in the final.
The Titans’ batting lineup includes proven finishers David Miller and Rahul Tewatia. Set to start the campaign on a high note, GT will face off against Mumbai Indians on March 24th.
