Ex-Australia skipper Michael Clarke believes India has taken a significant risk by including four spinners in their T20 World Cup squad, emphasizing that their success will largely depend on spin bowling.

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has weighed in on the favorites for the upcoming T20 World Cup, pointing to India as the team to beat. Speaking in an ESPN Australia podcast, Clarke praised India’s meticulous preparation and the adaptability of their players to the Caribbean and American conditions, which he believes are similar enough to those in the subcontinent to give India an edge.

The former skipper also noted India’s bold choice to include four spinners in their T20 World Cup squad: Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Yuzvendra Chahal. He believes this strategy could be decisive, given his experience with Caribbean conditions where spin plays a crucial role.

“I mentioned it earlier, I think if you look at the favorites for this World Cup, it’s got to be India just because of the amount of cricket they’ve played. Their preparation is outstanding. The conditions are different in the Caribbean and America compared to India, but there are a lot of similarities, so their players should be used to that,” Clarke said.

“The other thing as well, I think India’s taken a risk with the squad they’ve picked, heavily relying on spin. It’s very different to Australia, but in conditions that I’ve experienced in the Caribbean, I think spin bowling and how you play spin is going to be a huge part of your success. So, you know, India is the biggest threat for me in regards to who’s going to win this World Cup,” he added.

Clarke further highlighted the advantage India has with their entire squad available for training from day one, noting that no Indian players were in the IPL final, unlike three Australians. This early team unity could be a significant boost for India, while Australia is still awaiting key players like Cummins, Starc, and Head, impacting their warm-up games.

The tournament kicks off with hosts USA facing Canada on June 1 at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas.
