Michael Vaughan’s bold World Cup calls

Michael Vaughan predicted South Africa to win the 2027 ODI World Cup and backed Australia for the 2025 Women’s title.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan, now a cricket commentator and analyst, made a strong prediction about the upcoming ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027. The tournament will be held in October and November across South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Vaughan believes South Africa will lift their first-ever ODI World Cup title.
Taking to X, Vaughan wrote, “South Africa to win the World Cup in 2027 me thinks…” South Africa have reached the semifinals of the ODI World Cup in 1992, 1999, 2007, 2015, and 2023 but never managed to make the final. On three occasions – 1999, 2007, and 2023 – Australia knocked them out and went on to win the trophy.
However, the Proteas ended a 27-year wait for an ICC trophy earlier this year by beating Australia in the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s. Aiden Markram scored a second-innings century to help South Africa chase down 282 with five wickets in hand.
So far, only three host nations have lifted the ODI World Cup – India in 2011, Australia in 2015, and England in 2019. South Africa will aim to join this elite list in 2027.

Along with his men’s World Cup prediction, Vaughan also backed Australia to win the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The tournament will be played from September 30 to November 2 across four venues in India – Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, Indore, Navi Mumbai – and one in Sri Lanka, Colombo. Retweeting Cricket Australia’s squad announcement, Vaughan wrote, “And the winners are…”
The Australian women’s team will be led by Alyssa Healy, with Tahlia McGrath as her deputy. The squad features experienced stars including Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ash Gardner, Megan Schutt, Grace Harris, Alana King, and Kim Garth.
