Mitchell Marsh defended his controversial ‘feet on World Cup Trophy’ photo, asserting that he meant no disrespect and hadn’t dwelled on the social media uproar.
After Australia’s emphatic victory over India in the 2023 World Cup final, a photo of Mitchell Marsh with his feet on the trophy sparked global attention and controversy. Indian bowler Mohammed Shami expressed disappointment at Marsh’s actions. Marsh, in response, clarified that he didn’t intend any disrespect with the photo and hadn’t paid much attention to the ensuing social media frenzy. He also mentioned that if presented with the opportunity again, he would repeat the same action.

“There was obviously no disrespect meant in that photo at all. I haven’t given it too much thought, I haven’t seen a lot on social media even though everyone tells me it’s gone off. There’s nothing in that,” said Marsh in a conversation with SEN.
Marsh also criticized the swift commencement of the India-Australia T20I series just four days after the 2023 World Cup final. Expressing discontent for the six players, including himself, who stayed behind in India while the rest of the World Cup-winning squad returned home, Marsh termed it “outrageous.”
“Yeah, it was pretty outrageous for the guys that had to stay behind,” Mitchell Marsh said. “It’s a fine line because we’ve got to respect the fact we’re playing for Australia and it’s a series against India which is always really big. But there’s also the human side of it, the boys have just won a World Cup and probably deserve to celebrate for a while and get home to their families,” Marsh said.
“It’s an interesting one. You’d hope there’s not too many of those series put on after big tournaments again. I celebrated for the six guys who stayed behind, I celebrated for them,” he added.
Finally, the remaining World Cup squad members – Steve Smith, Adam Zampa, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, and Sean Abbott – have
departed India. Australia, down 2-1 in the five-match T20I series, revived their hopes courtesy of Glenn Maxwell’s remarkable century after initial defeats. The upcoming fourth T20I moves to Raipur on Friday, December 1.
