Australian coach Andrew McDonald strongly suggested that all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will be named captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.
This news comes as the selection panel, led by George Bailey and including McDonald and Tony Dodemaide, finalised their choices for the mega event. While official confirmation is still pending, McDonald’s comments indicate a clear preference for Marsh.
“I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas. We’re happy and comfortable with the way he’s been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he’s the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course.” McDonald told the press.
Further, McDonald acknowledged the pressure associated with leading a team in a major tournament, especially for a player like Marsh who has recently carried a heavy workload, highlighting his efficiency as a captain, “He was coming off a significant injury through that World Cup. It takes a lot out of you mentally and physically.”
The coach also emphasised the importance of providing adequate rest for key players, suggesting lessons were learned from Travis Head’s participation in all three formats. He pointed to the successful management of bowlers’ workloads as a model for finding the right balance for all players.
Marsh’s captaincy credentials have been backed by his successful leadership of the Australian T20I side since their World Test Championship win last year. Under his leadership, Australia also secured a dominant 3-0 series victory over South Africa, with Marsh himself awarded Player of the Series honours. These victories were followed by further series wins against the West Indies and New Zealand.
Hence, with McDonald’s endorsement and a string of victories under his belt, Mitchell Marsh appears set to be named captain as Australia aims to defend their T20 World Cup title.
