In a thrilling start to the ongoing KKR vs SRH IPL 2024 final in Chennai, Mitchell Starc delivered a stunning blow in the very first over dismissing SRH opener Abhishek Sharma.
Starc delivered a flawless ball that angled in around the off-stump, catching Sharma off guard. Sharma, aiming to play towards mid-on, misread the late movement of the ball, which snuck past his outside edge and clipped the off stump. This dismissal mirrored Starc’s early breakthrough in Qualifier 1 as well.
Abhishek Sharma departed after scoring just 2 runs off 5 balls and the wicket has set the tone for the final.
Shortly after, in the second over, Vaibhav Arora claimed the wicket of Travis Head, caught behind by Rahmanullah Gurbaz. His departure for a duck compounded Hyderabad’s early woes, following Starc’s breakthrough.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first against Kolkata Knight Riders. SRH made one change, replacing Abdul Samad with Shahbaz Ahmed, while KKR retained the same eleven from Qualifier 1.
Kolkata Knight Riders have dominated the season, finishing first with nine wins and three losses. The addition of Gautam Gambhir as a mentor proved beneficial for the two-time champions. Kolkata secured their spot in the final by defeating Hyderabad in the first qualifier. Meanwhile, SRH had a phenomenal season as well, clinching eight wins in the group stage to qualify for the first qualifier. After a defeat to Kolkata, they faced Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2, where they posted a competitive total of 175 runs and won by 36 runs, earning their tickets to the final.
