On Sunday, October 22, in the 21st match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 held in Dharamshala, India secured a victory with 4 wickets in hand and 12 balls to spare against New Zealand.
In the first innings, India’s Mohammed Shami played a pivotal role in the final 10 overs of New Zealand’s innings. New Zealand appeared to be heading towards a big total with Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra’s 159-run partnership, but in the last 10 overs, they managed just 54 runs and lost six wickets.
India’s seamers started strong, and Shami took a wicket with his very first ball. However, India’s lack of a sixth seamer forced them to rely on spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, who were expensive. Ravindra and Mitchell’s partnership was finally broken in the 34th over when Shami dismissed Ravindra for 75 off 87 balls. Mitchell went on to score a century. India eventually staged a comeback, and New Zealand was bowled out for 273 runs.
India’s pursuit of 274 runs saw Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill establish a solid opening partnership, accumulating 71 runs primarily through boundaries. However, Lockie Ferguson’s delivery removed Rohit after he scored 46 runs from 40 balls, and Gill departed with 26 runs from 31 balls. The duo of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer combined for the third wicket, adding 52 runs before Trent Boult dismissed Iyer with 33 runs from 29 deliveries.
KL Rahul partnered with Kohli, contributing over 50 runs, but was dismissed by Mitchell Santner for 27 runs from 35 balls. Kohli led the innings but was caught out at 95. Ravindra Jadeja then scored the winning runs with a boundary, securing a four-wicket victory for India with 12 balls to spare, remaining unbeaten on 39 runs from 44 balls.
