Team India pacer Mohammed Shami picked Virat Kohli as the best batter globally and named Rohit Sharma as the most dangerous batter, citing their stellar performances.
During an interview at News18 India’s ‘Chaupaa’ event, pacer Mohammed Shami topo pick’s hailed his teammates, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as the best and most dangerous batters globally. This acknowledgment came as no surprise, considering their outstanding performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where Kohli amassed 765 runs, and Rohit scored 597 runs, emerging as the top two run-scorers.
“Virat Kohli is the best batsman in the world. Virat has just broken a lot of records. I feel Virat is the best and Rohit Sharma is the most dangerous batter in the world,” he told News18.
Notably, Shami himself excelled in the tournament, clinching 24 wickets in seven matches at a remarkable average of 10.71, along with three five-wicket hauls. However, Shami has been sidelined due to an ankle injury since the tournament’s final. After an outstanding year, he was honored with the Arjuna Award earlier this year.
When questioned about the best captain, Shami acknowledged the difficulty of choosing but ultimately selected MS Dhoni. He explained that success often determines greatness, and Dhoni’s unparalleled achievements made him the top choice.
“Look, it is a tough question. These things start with comparisons, but you will say that the one who is most successful (is the best captain). So for me, it is MS Dhoni because no one has been as successful as him,” Shami said.
Shami also discussed India’s pacers’ remarkable performance in the ODI World Cup, attributing it to the groundwork laid back in 2013-14. He emphasized that the success was built upon years of effort. Despite Shami’s standout performance as the leading wicket-taker, Jasprit Bumrah also made a significant impact in the tournament.
However, Shami’s participation in the ongoing Test series against England remains uncertain due to injury. Currently undergoing treatment for his ankle in the UK, his return for the remaining matches seems improbable.
