The Asia Cup trophy remains locked in the ACC’s Dubai office after Mohsin Naqvi reportedly ordered it not to be moved or handed over to India without his presence.
The Asia Cup trophy remains under lock and key at the Asian Cricket Council’s Dubai headquarters after India refused to receive it from ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi. Following India’s win over Pakistan in the September 28 final, Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board and serves as the country’s Interior Minister, walked away with the trophy.
Latest reports from PTI indicate that Naqvi has ordered the cup to remain in Dubai and barred its movement without his personal approval. The issue has escalated the already strained Indo-Pak relations in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. Sources suggest Naqvi plans to personally hand over the trophy to the Indian team or the BCCI when the situation permits.
“As of today the trophy is still in ACC offices in Dubai with clear instructions from Naqvi that it should not be moved or handed over to anyone without his approval and in person presence,” PTI quoted a source as saying.
“Naqvi has given clear instructions that only he will hand over the trophy in person (whenever that happens) to the Indian team or BCCI,” they added.
BCCI to Raise Asia Cup Trophy Controversy at ICC Meeting
The Asia Cup tournament saw Indian players avoiding post-match handshakes with their Pakistani counterparts and both teams exchanging politically charged gestures. The situation escalated further after Mohsin Naqvi walked away with the trophy following India’s win. The BCCI has objected strongly to Naqvi’s actions and plans to raise the issue at the upcoming ICC meeting. Reports suggest the board may seek disciplinary action or even push for Naqvi’s removal as ICC Director.
“It remains to be seen what will be the long term ramifications for the PCB or Naqvi because the BCCI is clear he (Naqvi) didn’t have any right to insist on handing the trophy himself to the Indian team and refusing to send it to the BCCI who were official hosts of the event,” the report concluded.
