Gautam Gambhir reportedly scolded Morne Morkel for arriving late to a training session, leading to tension in the Indian camp.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly confronted bowling coach Morne Morkel during the Australia tour over arriving late to a training session. Morkel, delayed due to a personal commitment, faced Gambhir’s displeasure directly at the training ground. The incident, which occurred during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has since been brought to the attention of the BCCI.

Following the reprimand, reports suggest Morkel appeared reserved for the remainder of the series, which India lost 1-3. The situation has sparked concerns within the team environment, with the onus now on Gambhir and Morkel to address the matter.

“Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground. The board has been told that Morkel was a bit reserved during the rest of the tour. It’s up to these two to sort it out for the team to function smoothly,” the Times of India quoted a source as saying.

Notably, since Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach, India has lost six of their last 10 Tests, raising concerns about team performance.

The role of batting coach Abhishek Nayar is also under evaluation, with the BCCI seeking feedback from players. Questions are being raised about his ability to offer impactful contributions. Similarly, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate’s limited international experience has drawn criticism, with doubts about his capability to improve player performance.

“Batting coach Abhishek Nayar is particularly under the scanner. Gambhir himself has been an accomplished batter. The board has asked the players if Nayar is bringing anything new to the table. Similarly, the assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate’s role is being discussed. His lack of international experience and ability to contribute to enhancing an international cricketer’s performance has been questioned,” the source added.

Meanwhile, reports of a rift between Test captain Rohit Sharma, coach Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were dismissed by the BCCI earlier. The board remains focused on reviewing the team’s performance and addressing concerns ahead of upcoming assignments.
