Aakash Chopra on MS Dhoni’s future
Aakash Chopra said MS Dhoni might not take up India’s coaching role as the job demands heavy commitment and travel.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his views on whether MS Dhoni could step into coaching after retirement. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra explained that coaching requires as much dedication as playing, and Dhoni may not be interested in such a role.
“That is a big one. I don’t think he is interested. Coaching is a difficult job. Coaching keeps you as busy as you were when playing and sometimes even more than that. You have a family and you say that you have done the same thing your entire life, you have lived your life out of a suitcase and you don’t want to do that job now,” Chopra said.

He further explained why many cricketers avoid full-time coaching stints. “That is why a lot of players don’t get into coaching and even if they do, it’s a two-month IPL stint. However, if you become a full-time Indian head coach, it’s a commitment of 10 months a year,” he added.
Chopra did acknowledge that Dhoni could take up coaching if he wished to contribute again to Indian cricket. However, Dhoni, who led Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 where they finished at the bottom of the table for the first time, has already admitted that the team has gaps to address. The franchise will look to fix those issues at the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
With most teams settled ahead of the new season, CSK face a big challenge in rebuilding their squad, while Dhoni’s long-term role in cricket beyond playing remains uncertain.
