In a playful Instagram video shared by Samsgroup, Captain Moeen Ali shared his personal top 5 favorite Indian cricket icons. Expressing his admiration, Ali ranked MS Dhoni at the top spot, acknowledging Dhoni’s remarkable contributions as a captain beyond his playing prowess. Following Dhoni, Ali lauded Virat Kohli for his exceptional skill, placing him second. Sachin Tendulkar secured the third position owing to his legendary status and influence on modern batting techniques. Ali also acknowledged the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, though considering him as a player from an era preceding his own.
“No.1 is Dhoni. It’s not just because of how good of a player he was, but it’s everything he achieved for India as a captain. Virat No.2, because he is probably one of the best players. Sachin is No. 3, because of him being Sachin and he started proper batting. Sunil Gavaskar as well but he was before my era,” Ali said.
Ali reserved the fourth and fifth positions on his list for Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh, respectively. Admiring Sehwag’s batting prowess across all formats, Ali highlighted his admiration for Sehwag’s ability to dismantle bowlers in Tests, ODIs, and T20s.
Regarding Yuvraj Singh, the skipper expressed a personal connection, acknowledging Yuvraj as someone he copied in his batting style. Ali also mentioned how comparisons between himself and Yuvraj have often surfaced.
Previously, the Chennai Super Kings’ all-rounder had commended Dhoni’s unwavering support for players despite occasional poor performances. Ali credited Dhoni and CSK for providing opportunities to struggling players. In IPL 2023, Ali has played 13 matches, scoring 115 runs at an average of 16.42 and a strike rate of 132.18. He has also secured nine wickets with an economy rate of 7.50.
