CSK is expected to retain MS Dhoni for IPL 2025, potentially benefiting from a potential BCCI rule change that would classify him as an uncapped player.
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction draws closer, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly set to retain MS Dhoni. These rumours come amidst speculation that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may reintroduce a player retention policy for the upcoming season.
The mega auction is scheduled to take place in December this year, likely outside India with the Middle East emerging as a potential host. While the BCCI has not yet confirmed the retention rules, franchises are expected to have until mid-November to finalize their retention decisions. The auction will also feature the return of Right to Match (RTM) options, adding another layer of strategy for teams.
According to RevSportzGlobal, if the BCCI allows franchises to retain five players, CSK’s list is likely to include Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, MS Dhoni, and Matheesha Pathirana. Notably, Dhoni is expected to be placed in the lowest bid category, potentially allowing CSK to manage their salary cap more effectively.

Another important decision that CSK has to take regarding retentions is of Devon Conway. The player is and will be a key consideration for the team in their game plannings, however, a cryptic short message from Devon’s side makes CSK hanging by the thread. When a spectator asked Conway whether he would stay in CSK or not for IPL 2025, the batter replied in a single word, ‘Hopefully’.
BCCI Might Introduce New Rule For Retired Players
The BCCI is considering reintroducing a rule that would classify players who have retired from international cricket for at least five years as uncapped players. This could significantly benefit CSK, allowing them to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player and preserve more of their salary cap for other key players.
Under previous regulations, retaining an uncapped player cost a franchise only INR four crore, compared to the INR 12 crore CSK paid to retain Dhoni in 2022.
