MS Dhoni’s IPL future will hinge on the outcome of the player retention rules decided by the BCCI, as Dhoni told himself in an event.
Cricket icon MS Dhoni has adopted a cautious stance regarding his participation in the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 43-year-old Chennai Super Kings (CSK) veteran has indicated that his decision will depend largely on the player retention rules to be finalised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Speaking at an event, Dhoni said, “There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention, etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but it needs to be in the best interest of the team.”
The BCCI held a crucial meeting with franchise owners and officials in Mumbai on Wednesday to discuss several key issues, including the impact player rule, player retention policy, and the format of the mega auction.

Dhoni’s future in the IPL has been the subject of speculation for several seasons now. While the captaincy reins were handed over to Ruturaj Gaikwad this year, Dhoni continued to play a pivotal role for CSK, finishing as the team’s highest scorer with a strike rate of 220.54. Speaking of IPL 2024, CSK narrowly missed out on a playoff berth, finishing fifth on the points table despite Dhoni’s explosive batting in the death overs.
Nevertheless, Dhoni’s stance on his future in the IPL remains to be seen, as the player retention policy will hopefully be discussed soon before the 2025 mega-auction. As of the recent meeting, reports stated that the IPL franchise owners were divided over the player retention rule itself.
