CSK on the Hunt for a New Wicketkeeper
Chennai Super Kings are reportedly searching for a new wicketkeeper as they await MS Dhoni’s retirement decision and clarity from the BCCI on retention rules.
The Chennai Super Kings are still waiting to hear from MS Dhoni regarding his plans for IPL 2025. Dhoni, who recently returned from a vacation in the USA, stepped down as CSK captain ahead of IPL 2024, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over. According to reports from The Indian Express, the franchise is now awaiting the BCCI’s announcement on player retention rules for the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.
Despite stepping down as captain, he played the entire 2024 season as a wicketkeeper-batter, though CSK missed the playoffs. Speculation around MS Dhoni’s retirement has been ongoing for the last few seasons, especially after leading CSK to five IPL titles.
“We are yet to hear from him. Once the BCCI makes a formal decision on the number of retentions, we will have a clear picture,” The Indian Express quoted sources as saying.
Will Dhoni’s Retirement Change CSK’s Retention Strategy?
MS Dhoni has faced significant injury challenges over the past two years. Last year, a knee issue limited his movement, leading to surgery after a successful campaign. Reports indicated he struggled with an injury during IPL 2024, affecting his ability to run long distances. However, although Dhoni batted lower in the order, he managed several impactful innings.
If Dhoni decides to play in 2025, he is likely to be among the five players retained by CSK. However, he may opt for the lowest pay category. Discussions held during an owners’ meeting with IPL Governing Council members on August 1 considered a return of rules allowing franchises to retain players who retired from international cricket five years ago in the uncapped category.

Should Dhoni decide against playing, CSK will need to consider whether to retain five players or rely heavily on the auction pool.
