Mahela Jayawardene Reappointed as MI Coach
Mumbai Indians reappointed Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach after his previous successful tenure from 2017 to 2022.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have officially reappointed former Sri Lankan cricketer Mahela Jayawardene as their Head Coach, marking his return to the role on Sunday. Jayawardene, who previously served as MI’s coach from 2017 to 2022, led the franchise to three Indian Premier League (IPL) titles during his tenure.
Reflecting on his reappointment, the 47-year-old Jayawardene expressed excitement about rejoining the team. “In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever, and we did very well. Now, to return at this moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to,” Mahela expressed in a press release.
In 2022, Jayawardene had transitioned to the role of Global Head of Cricket for MI, overseeing the franchise’s expansion into various global leagues. His return to the coaching role was welcomed by MI’s owner, Akash Ambani, who praised Jayawardene’s leadership and experience. “We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always benefited MI,” said Ambani.
Akash Ambani Acknowledges Mark Boucher
Ambani also acknowledged the contributions of Mark Boucher, who had stepped into the Head Coach role during Jayawardene’s absence. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Boucher for his contribution over the last two seasons. His expertise and dedication were pivotal, and he has now become an integral member of the MI family.”
Under Boucher’s guidance, MI reached the playoffs in the 2023 season but finished 10th in 2024. The team also saw leadership changes, with Hardik Pandya taking over as captain from Rohit Sharma, who had led MI from 2013 to 2023, winning five IPL titles during his captaincy.
