Nasser Hussain highlighted the stark difference in leadership styles between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, emphasizing Rohit’s inner fire compared to Kohli’s intense and aggressive approach on the field.
The transition of Indian captaincy from the fiery Virat Kohli to the calm and collected Rohit Sharma has been captivating. With India’s recent win in the Test series against England, former England captain Nasser Hussain offered insights into Rohit’s leadership.
Kohli’s aggressive tenure ended after the 2021 World Cup. Rohit, who led Mumbai Indians in the IPL, took over the reins following Kohli’s controversial step down after the 2022 South Africa tour.
In the recently concluded Test series against England, Rohit showcased remarkable form, amassing 400 runs across all five matches at a strike rate of 64.21, including two centuries.
Nasser Hussain, speaking to Sky Sports, praised Rohit’s batting prowess, highlighting his skill and brilliance. Hussain also commended Rohit’s captaincy, dispelling misconceptions about his laidback approach.
“I think sometimes people confuse Rohit as a laidback cricketer who just lets the game drift. There is a lot of skill, thought, and brilliance about his batting. And I thought he had an excellent series as captain. He himself said in the press conference that he has had to learn and adapt his own style of captaincy at times,” Nasser said.
The former England cricketer further cautioned against comparing Rohit Sharma’s captaincy to Virat Kohli’s, highlighting their distinct styles.
“Don’t confuse (Rohit with Virat’s captaincy) because he has come off the back of Virat Kohli. In your face, aggressive captain. In the huddle at Lord’s, saying let’s unleash hell on the England batting lineup. Rohit is not quite the same sort of person. He has that fire burning within,” he added.
Despite England’s early series lead, India dominated, winning four consecutive matches. Although England had opportunities in Rajkot and Ranchi, India’s resilience secured victories. The series concluded with India triumphing 4-1, sealing a commanding win in the final match by an innings and 64 runs.
