Australian spinner Nathan Lyon, 36, has dismissed speculation about retiring after the 2024-25 Ashes series, stating that it is too early for him to consider ending his international career.
Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has dismissed recent speculation about his retirement plans, particularly the rumors suggesting he might step away from international cricket following the 2024-25 Ashes series. Many had speculated that Lyon, 36, would follow a path similar to that of the legendary Shane Warne, who retired after the 2006-07 Ashes series.
However, Lyon made it clear during a discussion at the Sydney Cricket Ground with New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird on August 18 that he has no plans to retire soon. The conversation took place as part of the announcement of a seven-year agreement between the NSW government and Cricket Australia, aimed at promoting community cricket and enhancing the iconic Sydney Test, which traditionally concludes the Ashes summer.
While Warne retired after a highly successful career, Lyon is determined to keep playing, dismissing any thoughts of an immediate retirement.
“It’s too early,” Lyon was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald.
Nathan Lyon also discussed his time playing County Cricket for Lancashire, where he gained insights into England’s preparations for the upcoming Ashes series.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in England being inside the Lancs change room, listening to guys talk about the Ashes, talk about the way they’re planning, the way they’re going to approach winning out here. I had some really good chats with Tom Hartley about different ways that he went about it with different guys, which I found quite interesting,” he said.
