Australian spinner Nathan Lyon proposed a three-match World Test Championship Final to be played across different countries.
Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has put forward a radical idea to expand the ICC World Test Championship Final to a three-match series held across different countries. Lyon believes that a multi-match final would better capture the essence of Test cricket compared to the current single-match format. He acknowledged the challenges of scheduling such a series but emphasized the potential benefits it could offer.
“You potentially could go one in England, one in India, and one in Australia, so you have all different conditions, but obviously, the timing of that changes everything. I don’t think we’re going to get on the MCG in the middle of August, just putting it out there,” proposed Lyon.
Further, Nathan Lyon praised the World Test Championship for its unique two-year format, which demands consistent performances from teams throughout the cycle. He recalled the memorable match against the West Indies in Brisbane earlier this year, which Australia narrowly lost despite their strong performance. “I feel like there’s no more dead rubber. You look at us last year; losing against the West Indies at the Gabba hurt us a fair bit,” added the spinner.

The Australian spinner also highlighted the importance of the World Test Championship as the premier long-format competition. He compared it to the FIFA World Cup, emphasizing its significance in the cricketing world. “It’s massive, but I feel like the World Test Championship for me is like the World Cup and that’s a genuine big World Cup. When you are competing against the best for long periods of time over a two-year period, you have to be good for the whole lot,” Nathan Lyon concluded.
