Reports suggest Rohit Sharma will not play the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the Australia series in October 2025 likely being his last.
Reports suggest Rohit Sharma may not play the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the October 2025 Australia series likely marking his final ODI outing. The three-match series, scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25, could see formal announcements from both Rohit and Virat Kohli regarding their 50-over futures.
Rohit, who will be 40 by 2027, has been a central figure in India’s ODI journey for over a decade, delivering match-winning performances alongside Kohli. However, according to CricTracker reports, team management under head coach Gautam Gambhir is preparing for a long-term transition, prioritising younger players for the South Africa World Cup. Fitness and workload concerns are also being factored into this plan.
Notably, Rohit Sharma’s ODI journey includes 273 matches, where he amassed 11,168 runs at an average of 48.76. His record features 32 centuries, 58 fifties, and three double centuries. Recently, he also led India to Champions Trophy win in Dubai.

Shubman Gill, already India’s Test captain and vice-captain in the Asia Cup squad, is emerging as the leading candidate to take over the ODI leadership. If reports hold true, Indian fans may witness Rohit’s last match in ODIs against Australia.
