Cricket West Indies (CWI) has made a significant change to their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA, replacing star pacer Jason Holder with left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Obed McCoy will replace Jason Holder in the West Indies squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Holder, who was injured during the 2024 County Championship while playing for Worcestershire, will miss the tournament.

CWI stated that Holder’s injury was sustained during his county stint and that the team’s medical staff will be supporting his recovery. Interestingly, Holder was called up to the squad in 2021 after McCoy was injured at the T20 World Cup.

Lead selector Desmond Haynes expressed confidence in McCoy’s abilities, stating that while Holder’s experience will be missed, the team is optimistic about McCoy’s contribution.

“Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We look forward to having a fully fit Jason with us again soon. While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason’s caliber, we are confident in the abilities of Obed McCoy,” he said.

“Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to further showcase his talent on the international stage. We believe he will bring a fresh and dynamic energy to the squad,” Haynes added in a press release by Cricket West Indies.

Obed McCoy has been a standout performer with 33 wickets in 27 T20 games this year. He was the top wicket-taker on the West Indies A tour to Nepal and is currently playing in the T20I series against South Africa.

The West Indies, in Group C, will start their campaign on June 2 in Guyana. Aiming to become the first team to win the T20 World Cup at home, WI has previously won in 2012 and 2016. Hosting the tournament for the second time, they begin against Papua New Guinea, followed by Uganda on June 8, New Zealand on June 12, and Afghanistan on June 17 in St Lucia.
