Australian captain Mitchell Marsh shouldered the responsibility for his team’s defeat against Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup Super Eight stage.
In a sensational upset, Afghanistan outplayed Australia by 21 runs in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. The historic victory, which took place at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St. Vincent on Sunday, June 23, marks a significant moment for Afghan cricket.
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh acknowledged his team’s shortcomings in the post-match presentation. “They probably got 20 too many. Lot of teams have bowled first in this tournament. Don’t think it was won or lost at the toss. We had an off night on the field. Wasn’t the easiest of wickets but both teams played on it. As I said, we got outplayed today. We just need to win and there’s no better team to do it against,” Marsh said at the post-match presentation.
Batting first, Afghanistan set a competitive target of 148 runs on the board, with key contributions from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Their bowling attack then rose to the challenge, dismantling the powerful Australian batting line-up.

Gulbadin Naib emerged as the hero for Afghanistan, claiming a stellar four-wicket haul for just 20 runs in his four overs. Naveen-ul-Haq also chipped in with three wickets, restricting Australia to a total of 127 runs.
Player of the Match Gulbadin Naib expressed his elation over the win. “This is a great moment for me, my nation, and my people. We worked hard for the last two months, and the result is in front of you.”
Naib also spoke about the team’s growing confidence. “It is a great achievement for Afghanistan cricket. We played great cricket in the last World Cup, and this year, we beat New Zealand in the group stage. Our journey starts now. We have great management, and I’m very fortunate to have this team,” concluded Naib.
