Pakistan’s Cricket Board responded to criticism following the T20 World Cup exit by collecting evidence for potential legal action against critics, including former cricketers and YouTubers.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials are taking aim at critics following the national team’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 group stage. Captain Babar Azam, who had previously stepped down from the captaincy after the 2023 ODI World Cup, was reinstated upon request from key PCB officials. However, recent performances, including defeats against New Zealand and England and a group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup, have drawn heavy criticism.
Former cricketers like Ahmed Shehzad, Shoaib Malik, and Mohd Hafeez accused Azam of poor captaincy and favouritism towards certain players. Additionally, some YouTube content creators raised the serious allegation of match-fixing.
The PCB has responded firmly, collecting statements from journalists and former cricketers, which will be reviewed by their legal department. An unnamed official close to the situation emphasised that “baseless allegations” will not be tolerated.
“We are fully aware of these negative comments. Criticism within the bounds of the game is acceptable, and there is no objection to it. However, baseless allegations like match-fixing cannot be tolerated under any circumstances,” the official said.
The PCB maintained its faith in the team and demanded proof from those making accusations. “PCB has no doubts, so why should we conduct an inquiry? Those who made the allegations should provide proof. We have instructed our legal department to issue notices to such individuals and demand evidence. If not provided, we will seek compensation for defamation. A new law in Punjab ensures that a decision will come within six months,” concluded the official.
