Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten criticized the national cricket team for their lack of unity following their early exit from the T20 World Cup, saying he has never seen such disunity in his coaching career.

Pakistan head coach Gary Kirsten has harshly criticized the team following their early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Kirsten, in his first stint with the team, pointed out the lack of unity among the players. Entering the tournament as runners-up from the previous edition, Pakistan delivered one of their poorest performances in recent years, managing only a consolation win over Ireland. They suffered a shocking defeat to newcomers the United States and narrowly lost to arch-rivals India.

According to Pakistan’s Geo Super News, Kirsten, who previously led India to victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup, expressed his frustration with the team’s disjointed nature, stating that there was no support among the players and that the team lacked cohesion.

“There’s no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I’ve worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” Kirsten was quoted as saying.

According to PTI’s report citing Geosuper.tv, Kirsten also expressed concerns over the players’ fitness and skill levels, stating they lag behind the rest of the world. After the defeat to India, he attributed the loss to poor decision-making and questioned the shot selection of the batters. Kirsten reportedly warned that only players who improve in these areas would be retained in the team.

“No one knows which shot to play when. Players who improve in these areas will be included in the team; otherwise, they will be dropped,” the coach was quoted.

Former cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Michael Vaughan have reacted to Gary Kirsten’s criticism of the Pakistan cricket team. Harbhajan suggested Kirsten should resign as Pakistan’s head coach and return to coach Team India, praising Kirsten’s impact as a mentor and coach during India’s 2011 World Cup victory. Meanwhile, Vaughan supported Kirsten’s comments, describing them as strong but accurate.
