Pat Cummins has confirmed he is aiming to return for Australia’s second Ashes Test at the Gabba after missing the opener in Perth.
Australia captain Pat Cummins has resumed bowling and is targeting a return for the second Ashes Test against England, starting December 4 in Brisbane. The pacer, recovering from a lower-back injury that has kept him out since July, has been ruled out of the opening Test in Perth. Steve Smith will lead Australia in his absence, with Scott Boland expected to fill the vacant bowling spot.
Cummins has started bowling multiple overs with a shortened run-up and remains confident of featuring in the day-night Test at the Gabba. He will undergo a final fitness assessment in Perth before a decision is made.
“We’re building our plan towards the second Test. It’s not until you get closer that you know your condition, but I’m recovering well and my body feels great. We’re keeping the second Test as an option. I’ll have a good bowl in Perth, and then I’ll know where I stand,” Cummins told the reporters in Sydney.
Pat Cummins then admitted he is uncertain about his workload in the upcoming match. Cummins said he aims to play as many matches as possible but will manage his fitness carefully to avoid aggravating his back injury.

“I don’t want to commit too early. I’m eager to play as much as possible. Realistically, if I have a big game and bowl 40 or 50 overs, and then there’s another game a few days later, it might be too much. I’m working to get fit and hope to play most of the series,” he added.
With the third and fourth Tests in Adelaide and Melbourne separated by only four days, rotation among fast bowlers is expected. The final Test in Sydney also comes after a brief four-day gap.
