Pat Cummins Uncertain For Champions Trophy 2025

Pat Cummins’ participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy is uncertain due to an ankle injury, with scans pending.
Australia’s cricket fans are anxiously awaiting news on Pat Cummins’ fitness, as the captain and ace bowler may miss the much-anticipated Champions Trophy. The 30-year-old, who led Australia to victory in the 2023 ODI World Cup, is currently dealing with a sore ankle, and scans are expected to reveal the severity of the injury. The outcome of these tests will determine whether Cummins can participate in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next month.
This injury represents a significant setback for Australia, as they aim to reclaim the Champions Trophy, a title they last won in 2009. Cummins has been pivotal in Australia’s recent successes, and his absence would leave a void not only in the team’s leadership but also in their bowling attack. Cummins is already missing the Test tour of Sri Lanka for personal reasons, and now, his fitness for the Champions Trophy is in jeopardy.
Cricket Australia confirmed on Thursday that Cummins is managing ankle pain, but the full extent of the injury remains unclear. Chief selector George Bailey, while addressing the media, stated, “We’ll have to wait and see when the scan comes back and see how it’s tracking. There’s a little bit of work to do.”

With less than two months until the Champions Trophy, time is running out for Australia to assess their captain’s fitness and prepare for the tournament. Notably, if Cummins is ruled out, Mitchell Marsh, the vice-captain in ODIs, is expected to take over the leadership duties. Marsh has already shown his leadership abilities by captaining Australia in T20 matches.
The selectors have confirmed that Marsh will be part of the squad for the Champions Trophy, which is set to be announced next week. His absence from the Test squad for Sri Lanka indicates that Australia is prioritizing his availability for the Champions Trophy.
Cummins isn’t the only pacer Australia is looking after. Josh Hazlewood, who is recovering from a calf injury, has also been rested from the Sri Lanka Test series. This leaves Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Sean Abbott as the key fast bowlers for the Test matches in Sri Lanka.
