The London-bound AI-171 flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft hit a nearby hostel building, killing 274 people, including 241 passengers and 33 on the ground.

The BCCI and England Cricket also acknowledged the loss through posts on social media.
“The Indian Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash ahead of the start of play on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. The teams are wearing the black armbands to express solidarity with those affected,” BCCI wrote on its official ‘X’ handle.

“Both teams will wear black armbands today as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the Air India plane crash. Out thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible events that took place in Ahmedabad last week,” ECB’s post read.

In the match, England captain Ben Stokes chose to bowl first. India made a strong start with a 91-run opening stand between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, England struck back late in the first session. KL Rahul was dismissed for 42, while debutant Sai Sudharsan fell without scoring. Jaiswal remains unbeaten at the break, holding firm at one end.
