Shreyas Iyer discussed the mental challenges of Test cricket, emphasizing the anticipated intensity in the upcoming England series, revealing his decision to play the Ranji Trophy as a means to build a rhythm.

Shreyas Iyer, the middle-order batsman for Team India, revealed his strategy of playing in the Ranji Trophy to regain his red-ball form ahead of the Test series against England. After being excluded from the T20I squad for the Afghanistan series, Iyer chose to participate in the Ranji Trophy match against Andhra, contributing significantly to Mumbai’s crucial victory with a run-a-ball 48.

Despite facing challenges from Andhra bowlers exploiting his short-ball weakness, Iyer aimed to create a rhythm for the upcoming high-intensity five-Test series against England. Acknowledging the effort required to stand on the field for 90 overs, Iyer emphasized the significance of the Ranji Trophy experience in preparing for the demanding Tests.

“It was a nice experience. I wasn’t expecting much from myself to be honest, but I wanted to create a rhythm going forward into the five-Test matches. The intensity will be high. Also, to stand on the field for 90 overs takes a lot of effort, so it all started from here (match against Andhra Pradesh),” Iyer said when speaking on JioCinema.

“You have to take one match at a time and not think much ahead. You have to take all the factors into consideration. In terms of your mental ability, the stress is going to be a lot but at the same time, you have to handle the pressure situations well. So, these are the pros and cons of playing Test matches,” he added.

Despite a less-than-ideal performance in the South Africa Tests, Iyer retained his spot for the initial two matches against England, facing scrutiny over his vulnerability to short balls. Acknowledging this weakness, he further stressed the importance of mental resilience in Test cricket, highlighting the significance of playing Ranji Trophy as a suitable preparation for adapting to the challenges posed by the extended format.
