South Africa has removed David Teeger as the U19 Captain due to security concerns arising from his comments on the Gaza-Israel conflict.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has removed David Teeger as the captain of their Under-19 side for the upcoming ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 due to security concerns related to his position in the Gaza-Israel conflict. Despite being relieved of the captaincy, Teeger, who showcased his talent with 159 runs for South Africa Emerging in the CSA Provincial Challenge Division Two, will remain part of the squad for the tournament.
CSA stated that the decision was made in the best interests of all players, the SA U-19 team, and Teeger himself, with the announcement of a new captain to follow.
“CSA has been receiving regular security and risk updates regarding the World Cup. We have been advised that protests related to the war in Gaza can be anticipated at the venues for the tournament. We have also been advised that they are likely to focus on the position of the SA Under-19 (SA U19) captain, David Teeger, and that there is a risk that they could result in conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protestors,” the official statement read.
“In all the circumstances, CSA has decided that David should be relieved of the captaincy for the tournament. This is in the best interests of all the players, the SA U19 team and David himself. David will remain an important and active member of the squad and we wish him and the team every success in the tournament. The newly appointed captain will be announced in due course,” it added.
The issue arose from Teeger’s remarks at the ABSA Jewish Achiever Awards on October 22, 2023. Accepting the Rising Star award, he dedicated it to Israeli soldiers, proclaiming them as the true rising stars.
At the New Year’s Test between South Africa and India at Newlands, a gathering of pro-Palestinian supporters voiced concerns over Teeger’s selection, leading to police intervention and heightened tensions. Simultaneously, another group displayed Palestinian flags in the North Stand. The ongoing debate has intensified as pro-Palestinian feelings rise in South Africa, fueled by the country’s choice to bring Israel to the International Court of Justice.
The tournament is set to kick off on January 19, featuring South Africa facing off against West Indies in their opening match.
