Punjab Kings Removes Trevor Bayliss, Sanjay Bangar
Punjab Kings has parted ways with their head coach Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar, appointing Ricky Ponting as their new head coach.
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Punjab Kings have decided to part ways with their head coach Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar. The decision was made by the franchise’s board of co-owners.
The move is part of Kings’ efforts to revamp their coaching staff. Earlier this month, they appointed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. Ponting, who has signed a four-year contract (2025-28), has expressed his determination to bring about a change in the franchise’s fortunes.
Bayliss, who took over as Kings’ head coach after IPL 2022, and Bangar, who joined the franchise in December 2023, will no longer be associated with the team. Punjab Kings, who have never won the IPL title, finished eighth in 2023 and ninth last season.
Interestingly, Bangar’s first stint with Kings was in 2014 as their head coach, a position he held until the end of 2016. He then served as India’s assistant coach before joining Royal Challengers Bangalore as their batting consultant. In December 2023, he rejoined Kings. Bayliss replaced former India captain Anil Kumble, who was the franchise’s head coach from 2020 to 2022. In their quest for success, Kings have had a revolving door of coaches in the last decade.
“Not Going To Accept Mediocrity”: Ponting To Bring In New Era For the Kings
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Ponting said, “The biggest thing that I want to do at Punjab Kings is make everyone aware that it’s going to be a different place. We are not going to sit back and just accept mediocrity and finish down the bottom and have other people sit back and talk about the way the franchise is going. It is going to be more dynamic. And people are going to be talking about this team and this franchise in a different way than ever before.”
