Sanjay Bangar, Punjab Kings’ head of cricket development, blamed poor home form and player availability issues for their disappointing IPL 2024 finish.

Punjab Kings finished a disappointing ninth in IPL 2024 after losing their final match to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar pointed to their struggles at home as a major factor in their underwhelming performance.

“Winning just one out of seven home matches is a worrying aspect. If a team wants to progress, that needs to improve,” Bangar admitted at the post-match press conference. He essentially highlighted the contrast between their away form (winning 4 out of 7) and their home record.

Bangar also acknowledged crucial moments lost throughout the season, especially in close home games where they fell short. “Leaving so much to be done in the latter half makes things challenging,” he stated.

Despite the overall struggles, Bangar found bright spots in the performances of young domestic batters like Prabhsimran Singh, Shashank Singh, and Ashutosh Sharma.

Injuries and player availability also impacted the team. “We lost key players like Liam Livingstone and Kagiso Rabada due to unforeseen circumstances,” Bangar explained. He acknowledged the impact of the extended tournament schedule on English players’ availability.

“Losing Livingstone due to a niggle and the ECB pulling him out, along with KG’s (Rabada) infection that forced him back to South Africa, hurt us. While these issues aren’t the sole reason for our struggles, they did leave us short of experience at the end,” said Bangar.

Reflecting on their final match against SRH, Bangar conceded lapses in bowling. “We couldn’t contain them after getting an early wicket. We could have applied more pressure and given away too many runs in the powerplay,” admitted Bangar.
