Ravi Shastri Predicts Kohli’s Longevity, Uncertain on Rohit

Ravi Shastri expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s future while raising questions about Rohit Sharma’s form and longevity.

Veteran Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have come under scrutiny after failing to deliver impactful performances in both innings of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Their underwhelming displays have reignited discussions about their potential retirement, with former India head coach Ravi Shastri sharing his thoughts on the matter.

During the lunchtime show on Star Sports, commentator Mark Nicholas asked Shastri if the MCG Test marked the end of the road for Kohli and Rohit. Shastri was quick to back Kohli’s longevity, saying, “I think Virat will play for some time. Forget the way he got out, or whatever. I think he’ll play for another three or four years.”

However, Shastri appeared less optimistic about Rohit Sharma, adding, “As far as Rohit is concerned, it’s a call. At the top of the order, you know, just feel the footwork isn’t the same. He’s probably at times, late in meeting the ball so it’s his call at the end of the series.”

Chasing a daunting target of 340 runs on Day 5, India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal initially resisted the Australian attack. However, Rohit struggled against Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, eventually falling for 9 off 40 balls in the 16th over. KL Rahul soon followed, leaving Virat Kohli to anchor the innings.

Kohli’s presence provided a glimmer of hope for Indian fans, but his dismissal for 5 just before lunch left India reeling at 33/3. In this Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Rohit has managed only 31 runs across three matches, with a best of 10, while Kohli, despite an earlier century in Perth, averages just 12.4 in his last five innings.
