Ex-cricketer Ambati Rayudu defended India’s opening pair despite Virat Kohli’s early dismissals, citing his aggressive intent and backing him for a big knock soon.
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has expressed his opinion on the debate surrounding India’s opening combination in the T20 World Cup. While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s recent scores have not been impressive, Rayudu believes there is no need for a change.
“I don’t think there’s any need to change the combination right now. We saw a great cover drive and even on the ball that he (Kohli) got dismissed (against Pakistan), he had played a fine shot and just couldn’t get the elevation to clear the fielder. The intent he showed was great and if both Virat and Rohit can bat with this intent, then the big days will come when either one of them or both will win India the game one-sided,” said Rayudu as quoted by Sportskeeda.
Kohli’s success as an opener in IPL 2024, where he amassed 741 runs, prompted the change in India’s batting order. This allowed for Rishabh Pant’s inclusion at No. 3, which has yielded positive results so far.

Veteran spinner Piyush Chawla echoed Rayudu’s sentiments regarding Kohli’s form. “Even in his dismissals, his intent was clear. T20 is a format where things can go wrong quickly. But the way he’s hitting the ball suggests he’s in good form. A big knock is just around the corner,” Chawla said.
India’s next challenge is against the USA on June 12th. Both teams are undefeated so far, making it a crucial encounter for securing a place in the Super Eight stage.
