Before the Lok Sabha election announcement, IPL teams are reportedly gathering players’ passports as a precaution in case the second half of IPL 2024 moves out of India.
Amid preparations for the upcoming General Elections, BCCI officials are reportedly considering relocating the second half of IPL 2024 to the UAE. In 2014, due to similar electoral constraints, the first half of IPL was held in the UAE, and in 2020, the entire tournament shifted to the region due to the COVID-19 outbreak in India.
Although no official confirmation has been made, recent reported developments, such as IPL teams collecting players’ passports, hint at potential arrangements.
“The Election Commission of India will announce the election schedule on Saturday(March 16) at 3 pm. After that, the BCCI will decide whether IPL matches should be moved to Dubai. Currently, a few top BCCI officials are in Dubai to explore the possibility of organizing the second half of the IPL in Dubai,” some sources were quoted as saying by The Times of India.
The first half of the IPL schedule was revealed on February 22, but BCCI couldn’t proceed further due to the Election Commission of India withholding dates. Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore will start the tournament on March 22, with the final match of the first leg between Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans on April 7.
A potential break looms if IPL shifts to the UAE for its second phase. While there’s talk of returning to India for the tournament’s ending, it’s merely speculative until official discussions follow the Election Commissioner’s announcement of dates on March 16.
